“And why are we doing this again?” You huffed as you stomped behind Allistor. The redhead grinned at you, beckoning you closer. “C’mon, hurry up!”
You grumbled, him already speeding over the crag, his mighty walking boots resounding loudly. Sighing, you ruffled your hair, wondering why on earth you’d taken the scot up on his unusual request.
It was the winter solstice. And Allistor, coming from a superstitious family had been bought up to believe that it was a magical day. Not that you could blame him, the day had been different, but still!
You finally managed to catch up to him, well only because he was standing still at the top. “Isn’t it beautiful?”
The glen revealed itself, pure green from the insistent rain that stopped luckily the moment the two of you had set off. Loch Ness stretched out as far as you could see, the peaceful water rippling gently in the wind.
Grunting in response you swigged some water from your bottle and wiped the sweat from your face with your sleeve, doubled over. “Y’okay lass?” He asked, looking at you in concern. “I swear Allistor, I’m making you carry me back!”
He chuckled at that. “I can live with that.” You straightened up and took in your surroundings. It truly was stunning and you stared in awe. “Told ya.” Allistor said, gesturing at you to start descending down with him.
“So why are we here again?” You asked, leaning back so you wouldn’t trip and fall down the side of the small mountain. “Nessie, lass!” You groaned, facepalming and almost losing your balance in the process.
“I’m telling ya lass, strange and magical things happen on the night of the solstice!” He cheered, happily bouncing down the rocky path, surprising not losing his footing.
It’d been two hours of the freezing cold. Though Allistor had stoke a small fire and you were both bundled up in several blankets, your teeth chattered in sync with his. “C’mere.” He whined, but then came to snuggle next to you.
Grateful you leaned into his warmth, the tall Scotsman blushing sweetly. Not that you could tell as your noses were just a pink, your own cheeks a pink tint.
“W-why di-did you wann-a come out here!!” You moaned, resting your head against his shoulder. “I-It’s sai-said tha-that when someon-e sees Nessie, yo-you get to mak-e a wish...” He murmured, stuttering in the cold.
“A-a wi-wish?! That’s what I’m risking losing my toes for?!” You said, your voice shaking less in your anger.
“S’not just any wish lass! It’s important!” He frowned at you, his eyebrow twitching in frustration. “Oh yeah? Then what is it? If you’re comfortable with trusting a mythical monster with it, then why not me?” You asked, stabbing his chest with your finger.
He winced and caught your hand in his. “I-I can’t tell you!” Growling, you pushed him off the tree trunk you were sitting on and promptly sat on his hips. “Aaaaah, you’re much warmer, I think I’ll stay here like this.” You said evilly, settling down on him.
He tsked at you and tried to sit up, but was stopped by you, holding an accusing finger in front of his face. “Tell me and I’ll get off of you.”
He shook his head and the staredown between the two of you commenced. Watching your breath rise in small clouds, he sighed and gave up.
Then he pushed himself up and cradled you to his chest. You yelped when he sat up, nearly falling over if not for his arms holding you against him.
“Alli....stor?” He stared at the fire for a moment, you looking up at him. “It’s just easier to tell you about it this way, okay? Besides it’s warmer.” He muttered, his arms tightening around you.
“ ‘Kay.” You replied, resting your temple against his heart and you noted how fast it was beating.
Mentally Allistor was having a breakdown. She wants to know?!! How can I tell her without her freaking out?! I mean I’ve liked her for so long and my feelings are definitely pure, but wait, what if she doesn’t like me like that?!
Damn, I didn’t think of that, maybe I’ll get friendzoned and stay alone for my entire life! Oh good god, Nessie, my lady please tell me what I’m supposed to do!!
He gulped, a trickle of sweat running down his face. His eyes trained on the loch in front of him, he stood up suddenly when he saw a stirring in the water. Still holding you in his arms, he strode to the side of the lake in time to see a huge mass jump out of the water, do a backflip whilst it was in the air and break the surface of the water again.
Your breath hitched in your throat and Allistor crowed triumphantly, spinning you around in joy. “See! See! I told you she was real!!” To Allistor Nessie’s message couldn’t have been clearer.
Go for it!
He set you on your feet and gazed lovingly at you, grinning widely. “Well then lassie, my wish is this. I wish to be with you. Forever and ever.” He admitted sheepishly, his cheeks matching his hair.
You froze for a moment, then giggled. “Geez Allie! You didn’t have to go to such lengths to tell me.” His eyes widened and he blinked dumbfounded at your answer. “Do you mean....?”
Smiling at him, you nodded. “Jup!”
“Yes!!” He shouted, picking you up to spin you around in a circle like before. But instead of putting you down, he kissed you with surprising gentleness, as if you would break if he was too rough.
You melted in his kiss and he wrapped his blankets around you. The twinkling stars in the sky weren’t the only things smiling at the two of you.
Thank you Nessie.
